Doing business in PNG: common questions
Can a foreign company do business in Papua New Guinea?
Yes. Foreign enterprises, including PNG companies owned or controlled by non-citizens, must be certified by the Investment Promotion Authority before they can do business in the country. We guide you through registration and certification from start to finish.
What is an IPA Foreign Enterprise Certificate?
It is the certificate that lets a foreign enterprise carry on business in PNG. It sets out the activities the company may conduct, along with standard terms and conditions, and the company must not operate in activities outside what it has been certified for. It also doesn't replace other approvals, such as trading licences, tax registration, visas or sector licences.
Are some business activities reserved for Papua New Guineans?
Yes. Some activities are reserved for PNG citizens, and foreign investors cannot operate in them. We check your planned activities against these rules early, before you invest time and money.
How long does it take to set up a business in PNG?
It depends on your sector, structure and approvals needed. We give you a realistic timeline at the start, based on your situation rather than a best-case estimate.
